PBIS

What is PBIS?

PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) is defined traditionally as “a framework or approach comprised of intervention practices and organizational systems for establishing the social culture, learning and teaching environment, and individual behavior supports needed to achieve academic and social success for all students.” (Sugai et al, University of Oregon School-wide positive behavior support: Implementers’ blueprint and self-assessment.) Traditional discipline systems focuses on the student’s problem behavior and the goal was to stop the undesirable behavior through the use of punishment. PBIS however replaces the undesirable behavior with a new behavior or skill by altering environments, teaching appropriate skills and rewarding appropriate behavior. PBIS focuses on prevention and instruction and uses data to make decisions and develop appropriate curriculum through a collaborative process.

How is PBIS used at CES?

Bear Bucks

Each student is given the opportunity to earn Bear Bucks for displaying positive behavior in the school. Bear Bucks are used as an universal tool to reinforce positive and appropriate behavior at school. Any staff member can award a student with a Bear Buck, anywhere in the school including the bus. So ask your child when they have earned their last Bear Buck.

Compliment Cards

Each class has the opportunity to earn a compliment card when the class displays appropriate behavior in an encore class or area of the school outside of the classroom. This helps to ensure that all of our students are showing their positive behavior throughout the school building. Once a class has earned 5 compliment cards, they will turn them in for a glow bug to go in their class "Glowing Behavior Jar". The first class to fill up their jar will receive a special treat from the PBIS team.

The Camper's Post

Students can use their Bear Bucks to shop in our Camper's Post, which has been called the Bear Boutique in the past. The Camper's Post is full of books, toys, and school supplies that range in prices from 2 Bear Bucks to 50 Bear Bucks. We are always looking for donations for and appreciate all the support we receive.

Within the 5th and 6th grade, there are a few students that help run The Camper's Post. These students are chosen based upon their positive behavior, trustworthiness, and responsibility. They will assist the classes with their selections and help make The Camper's Post run smoothly.

If you have any questions about PBIS, please don't hesitate to talk to your child's teacher or to any PBIS Team member.
